The biggest event each year for the Wolfshäger Hexenbrut is Sankt-Walpurgisnacht, aka Walpurgis Night, on April 30. The name of the feast comes from the canonization of Saint Walpurga, who was hailed by the Christians of Germany for battling “pest, rabies, and whooping cough, as well as against witchcraft.” As is often the case, the day was chosen to coincide with/overtake a Pagen & indigenous holiday that far pre-dated Christianity: May Day, which celebrates spring transitioning to summer, so you’d have to be confused as to whether the bonfires you see burning are to ward off witches or were started by witches for celebration. The home city of the Wolfshäger Hexenbrut, Wolfshagen im Harz, Germany, is in the famous Harz Mountains where witches’ powers are said to be the strongest and Walpurgis Night is celebrated in over twenty towns in the region with bonfires, food, dancing, and witches!
After the May 5, 2016 posting of the premier performance of the dance at Walpurgis 2016 in Wolfshagen im Harz, Germany on YouTube, the video went viral (>3.6M views in October 2025) and dance and non-dance groups from covens, pagans, line dancers, folk dancers, and no particular affiliation started dancing and posting. The Wolfshäger Hexenbrut was so delighted to have people across the world doing their dance that they posted this Thank You video on May 23 and, later, a teaching video.

The part after the Lindy steps (Lindy = “cha-cha-cha – mambo”) is strange. It’s only 3 counts rather than 4 of everything else and the music, so you bump w/ the accented beat of the music only half the time, and it’s just awkward (some witches have a hard time coordinating w/ the music there). Groups in USA have modified it to be 4-counts as Cha-cha-cha (chassé) [1&2] + rock fwd w/hip bump [3] + recover [4] OR hip bump x2 w/inside or outside hip [3,4]. When you do the 4-count version, you only do 4x instead of 5x.
