Ivanice (Ivanica) – Macedonia [Atanas Kolarovski*]
Spelled both Ivanice and Ivanica in IFD world, Ivanice is the modern transliteration, but videos, music, and notes are populated with the Ivanica spelling. Of course, the song isn’t called Ivanice, it’s called Vie se Vie.
This dance is suitable for a closing dance, with singing, of course!
Notes
- Several of the IFD groups in videos do an exaggerated drop on the backstep way to the left with the R foot, but Atanas does not do this; he maintains even posture throughout the dance and crosses back only a comfortable amount with the R, preceding that with a forward placement of the L to get it out of the way for the R crossing back. I’ve seen this phenomenon in other Macedonian dances, such as Čije e ona mome, but that’s a special case where Fort Collins does some swooping round backstep to add to the confusion.
- There is a conscious step first on the heel then roll fwd to flat foot for the R and L steps of the 3rd measure (a syncopated S step: Slow…and, S +). This styling is missing in most IFD videos, but it appears in the notes.
- Some groups swing arms down to V and back up to W during the aforementioned backstep.
- Some groups (the same) add turns.
